To slay the Ancient Wyrm, Velgar, you must first complete the Dragon Slayer main quest, which culminates in a boss fight against him at Velgar’s Rise. The primary steps involve building a shelter, following Cathan’s trail through various locations, crafting a challenge horn from a dragon tooth, bloodwood sap, and bronze bars, and then confronting Velgar with appropriate gear, food, and antipoison potions.
Quest Overview and Preparation
The Dragon Slayer quest is the fifth primary quest in RuneScape: Dragonwilds and serves as your initial boss encounter. It is a prerequisite for the Withering Heights main story quest and unlocks the Fellhollow region for exploration and vault runs upon completion. Before embarking on this journey, ensure you have completed the Rune Mysteries quest.
Preparation is crucial for a successful attempt. You will need to gather specific items and equip suitable gear. Velgar is a poison-based boss, so antipoison potions are essential.
| Item | How to Get It | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Antlers | Kill deer in Bramblemead Valley | Deer run, use ranged or magic weapons |
| 23 Ash Logs | Trees in Temple Woods / Bramblemead | Also used for early building |
| 1 Coarse Animal Fur | Giant rats and kebbits | Refer to database for specific creature locations |
| 1 Dragon Tooth | Mine dragon skull’s teeth, western Stormtouched Highlands | Requires an iron pickaxe |
| 1 Bloodwood Sap | Harvest bloodwood tree, southern castle, Bloodblight Swamp | Requires an iron logging axe; Garou are present in the area |
| 5 Bronze Bars | Smelt from copper and tin | Refer to database for smelting process |
In addition to these materials, bring your best available armor and weapons, a generous supply of food for healing, and several antipoison potions. Expect to encounter goblins, garou, giant rats, putrid rats, and vault guardians throughout the quest, so be prepared for combat.
Key Locations and Material Gathering
The Dragon Slayer quest will guide you through several distinct regions of Ashenfall. Each location plays a vital role in your progression towards confronting Velgar.
Initially, you will speak with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village, who will instruct you to build a small shelter with a claimed bed roll. This shelter will serve as your respawn point. After building your base, the Wise Old Man will cast a locator spell using the antlers you provide, pointing you toward the Keep of Blue Flames.
The Keep of Blue Flames, located in the valley, is heavily populated by goblins. Inside, you will find Cathan’s journal, which directs you to a “blue-flame door” in the Whispering Swamp. Velgar himself will make an appearance here, spraying poison at the gate, though you will not fight him at this point. The “blue-flame door” is actually the Vertentis Kara vault, guarded by a power level 2 Rat King. After navigating the vault and speaking with Spitfoot, report back to the Wise Old Man.
He will then send you into Ghornfell after Cathan, which leads you to Velgar’s Rise in the Fractured Plains. Here, Cathan’s ghost will reveal the recipe for the challenge horn. The exotic materials for this horn are found in distant and dangerous regions:
- Dragon Tooth: Located in the Stormtouched Highlands. Travel past the garou skeleton camp on the western side to find a dragon skull. An iron pickaxe is required to mine its teeth.
- Bloodwood Sap: Found in the Bloodblight Swamp. Head to the castle at the southernmost point, where the bloodwood tree is located. Be aware of garou in this area. An iron logging axe is needed to harvest the sap.
Once you have both the dragon tooth and bloodwood sap, combine them with 5 bronze bars to craft the challenge horn.
The Velgar Boss Fight Strategy
The confrontation with Velgar takes place at Velgar’s Rise. Before entering, ensure you have your best armor and weapon equipped, a full inventory of antipoison potions, and plenty of food.
Upon placing the challenge horn on the dragonkin altar at the top of Velgar’s Rise, Velgar will appear on one corner of the triangular rooftop. His attack toolkit includes:
- Poison Spray: A direct poison attack.
- Poison Puddle Bombs: AoE poison attacks that create hazardous zones.
- Leg Stomps: Melee attacks that send spikes toward you. If engaging in melee, he will stomp his nearer leg, bite forward, and swing his head sideways.
Velgar’s attacks are delayed, indicated by tells. The key to success is to observe these tells, move to avoid the attack, and then capitalize on the pause between his actions to deal damage.
The fight follows a fixed rhythm:
- Quarter Health Phases: Each time Velgar loses a quarter of his health, he will fly off the rooftop.
- Bombardment: While airborne, he will bombard the roof with poison puddles.
- Relocation: After the bombardment, he will land on the next corner clockwise. This sequence repeats at half health and three-quarters health. For the final stretch, he lands back on his original corner.
During the bombardment phases, continuous movement is critical to avoid the poison puddles. Treat the corners of the rooftop as your arena rotation points. While the attacks themselves don’t introduce new mechanics in later phases, they will come faster. His full stats are available on the Velgar database page, and the boss guide provides detailed poison survival notes and loadout presets.
